Let's get down to business and explore some simple tips to improve your artistic drawing skills.

Some people are naturally amazing at drawing. There’s no knowing why this is the case, but some people seem to be artists from the moment they hold a pencil. This doesn’t mean that you can only be an artist if you’ve been good at something from a young age. Many people can hone their artistic skills, improving their talents.

Clearly, ‘art’ is a general term that refers to lots of different things. But, for the sake of this post, we’re looking at one specific area of art: drawing. So, let’s get down to business and explore some simple tips to improve your artistic drawing skills.

Draw and repeat

Practice makes perfect, and this couldn’t be more true for drawing. You will get better if you keep drawing things over and over again. One idea is to pick a photo or image and copy it repeatedly. Gradually, you will notice improvements in your strokes and the likeness of the image. This is the only way to get better; draw and repeat!

Check your eyesight

You’re not likely to progress with your drawing skill if you don’t have perfect vision. You need to see fine details to create accurate sketches and drawings and avoid eye strain in the process. Get your eyes tested to see if you need glasses.

If you don’t, carry on as usual – but be sure to draw in a well-lit area. This makes everything seem clearer and puts less strain on your eyes. If you do need glasses, visit websites to buy lenses and wear them when you draw. Our eyes naturally change as they age, and you do need to see clearly if you want to draw well.

Get the right supplies

You need some decent art supplies if you want to improve your drawing. This is a great, simple tip to take your work to the next level. You need sharp, reliable pencils and brushes with clean tips. Don’t bother fighting with sub-par products when you could choose materials that bring your work to life!

It’s a simple tip, but an upgrade to your supplies will make a massive difference to the end product.

Make your own doodles

Copying things is a great way to practice drawing, but you should also make your own doodles. Sketch things from your mind to get used to drawing different shapes and lines. The benefit of this is that you are in charge of how everything looks. It can be demotivating to copy an image and see how bad your work looks in comparison, as it inevitably will when you’re first starting. When you’re in control, you can play around with things as much as possible. It’s a great way of building confidence to get you to start copying images with more accuracy.

We can’t all be born with natural artistic talents, but that doesn’t mean you can’t improve your skills over time. If you want to improve your artistic drawing skills, try any of the tips above. You’ll find one or two may be more relevant to you than others. Regardless, pick each tip and see which one helps you improve the most.
